Sir James Audley of Stratton Audley (c.1318 - 1369)

Sir James Audley was born circa 1318 - the eldest son of another Sir James Audley, of Stratton Audley.

In 1348, he became one of the very first Knights of the Order of the Garter; two years earlier, he had served valiantly at the Battle of Crécy under King Edward III. He also fought in the naval Battle of Winchelsea in 1350, and the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. He was present at Calais when a peace treaty between England and France was officially signed in 1360.

Nine years later, James died at his residence at Fontenay-le-Comte, France, and was buried at Poitiers. He was around 50 years old.
