An Arncott Boy's Bravery

Aubrey John Newell was born in Arncott in 1892 - the son of Aubrey James Newell and his wife Sarah Ann (née Marriott).

At the age of just nine years, Aubrey was awarded a certificate (along with one pound and ten shillings) for bravely rescuing a younger boy called Archie Newell - supposedly no relation of his - from drowning in an icy pond.

Aubrey went on to marry Alice Eliza Wilkins in 1917, with whom he had at least one child. He died in 1958.
